paula newton, standing by in atlanta. paula? thank you, john. more now on the investigation into the new york subway shooting. police are looking for this man who they ve identified as a person of interest, though not a suspect. 62-year-old frank james is believed to have rented a u-haul van that could be linked to this shooting. the keys were found along with what police say were the shooter s belongings. now tuesday morning s attack began with a smoke grenade before a gunman opened fire. the man who was wounded in the shooting described what happened next. normally, the trains from 59th street to 36th street, it usually takes two minutes. but the train kept stopping in between tunnels, in between 45th street. it took forever, you know? and it s an old-style train. you can t switch scar cars. somebody broke the first door down and the second door was really hard to break. and i was just focused on the pregnant woman. and that s when i got struck in the leg, man.
described as a person of interest related to the shooting. they have, they say, tightened the mayor s security detail tonight out of abundance of caution. new york city s mayor eric adams is going to join us live at the moment. this is very live situation. the shooter is at large. what we re reporting from the scene is that it was before 8:24 this morning. it was manhattan-bound subway train in brooklyn. just before the train was about to enter the station of 36th street in the neighborhood of sunset park in brooklyn. an individual on the train put on what the nypd appears to be a gas mask. witnesses then tossed two smoke grenades which filled the train car with smoke. two senior law enforcement officials tell nbc that these bags and theires contents are believed to be tied to the suspect. you can see some what appears to be fireworks there.
telling the station agent there was many people injured, bleeding around the platform. and that is what i remember he said. i thought he said something about a smooth. i wasn t so sure right after that. that s what i saw. he had come up from the station. now, something i have learned something then is this apparently happened towards the front of the train. and the thing about 36th street is there s only one exit from the tracks. it s a little unusual. there is no stairways until the very back of the train. apparently he came all the way the whole length of the platform and then came out there with his wounded leg or legs and everything. that kind of explains what he did in order to warn people. as far as i know, he was the

multiple extended magazines, a hatchet. it gives you an idea of perhaps what more this gunman had planned. jason carroll, alexandra field, thank you. we spoke to a victim in his hospital bed. he said he was sitting right next to the suspect before the attack. he suffered a gunshot wound to the knee and is expected to be okay, but he said he s scared to ever ride the train again. i don t think i m going to ever ride the train again. as a busy train station on 36th street, trains going to all four burr burroughs, they re saying they don t have cameras? that s just ridiculous. and the train was an old end train. you can t even switch cars. that s unsafe as well. he was sitting next to the shooter on that car as he started firing. just remarkable stories of survival here. we will stay on top of that, particularly as the manhunt continues for the person behind
