the purecurfew. a few tense moments earlier a protest that was going on across the street from me and congressman elijah cummings came out with a couple members of his staff and other community lead wers a bull horn to try to urge people to disperse. he was just behind me wrapping up. you really did see the power of somebody with authority and authenticity who is local. the first thing congressman cummings did talk to him about the tactics and how to deal with the people that were still out. he was able to talk with the commander and there was a short of force by police officers who were wearing their full armor, they lined themselves up over here on north, they made sort of a line and they did move in. there were a couple sort of minor skirmishes. but ultimately, very calm reaction by the police here. and for the most part there
they also on the street and made it about half a block. since them, bits been a very stens tense standoff. do you have an establishment of the total number of people that have been involved with this protest since it began? it s definitely in the hundreds. i would say closer to about 700. they did have to get with several groups after the early skirmishes. and it seemed to dissipate, the crowd and investors. it s still a very tight crowd here, people a very diverse crowd, young and old. but it s primarily young.
and so i would suspect in a high profile case like this where you re doing an investigation, prudence would dictate that you would get a search and seizure warrant if there was any question at all about any implication of fourth amendment rights. mary cook, thank you very much for joining us tonight. we really appreciate it. thank you for having me. have a good night. we re going to go back to the streets of baltimore where msnbc s joy reid is standing by. joy, what is the situation there now? lawrence you can hear fire truck going fast us. basically, the sounds of teent has been a lot of virus. what we now see remaining on the street here at north and pennsylvania in west baltimore are mainly us mainly media at this point. just a few people who are still out here either being interviewed or staringeling past
and tonight there really hasn t been any struggle in that area at all. it seems to be that the community has taken to this curfew in a way that they are now conforming with it without any real problems. so starting shortly after 10:00, two nights in a row, there s been a buffer zone. the police have certainly allowed for people who have not left immediately. we re going to go to this new york city protest, what s going on right now in manhattan. this is amanda an msnbc reporter joining us there. what s happening there? good evening, lawrence. there s a lot of that s been marching on 10th avenue here. they met with other groups that were in times square which is the iconic times square of nrgs in. now we are here on 36th street. there have been some folks that tried going into a vacant parking lot where police chased after them.
