deal with schumer? i do. reporter: now trying to avoid the same feat as speaker mccarthy, the first speaker ever ousted after he relied on democrats to help keep the government open. and at an overall level of $1.66 trillion, similar to the deal mccarthy and the white house agreed to last may. by the time we could even get back into d.c., he had negotiated the terms of our surrender on the issue. do you think he s up to the job? i think the problem is we didn t do the right thing up front, so we focused on who should be the next speaker, we focus on a person. reporter: in protests key hard liners stalled action in the house this week. now those members want johnson to back away from his deal and seek even deeper cuts while also imposing new immigration restrictions. moves that would almost certainly cause a shutdown. i do want to fund a government that s working against us. a week or two short term shutdown.
forward we are looking for the correct legislation, not just any legislation and we want bills moving forward that will cut spending like we said we would do. a $1.66 trillion monstrosity is not what we signed up for. we body checked the conference and said, let s get back in the room and figure out what we need to do. we are all in general agreement on on the same page, we have a razor thin majority and it is tough sledding. we have to negotiate against a senate and white house having no interest in containing spending. they want the special side deals, the backroom deals, we want to adhere to that and get it done, cut spending. if we do a cr through this year, we will spend $100 billion less and restore some order, defense will be okay, veterans will be okay, we will reduce bureaucracy. mike johnson was on fox saying, i agree with chip roy,
$15.62. instead, another deal has been cut, and it s going to be 1.66 trillion, which uses a bunch of gimmicks to increase spending. americans are tired of that. so i oppose it. it s just more of the same, and i wish speaker johnson weren t doing this. i m very disappointed and hopefully we can try to figure out what to do in the next few days. who do you hold responsible for it? is it speaker johnson? well, i mean, his office is doing the negotiating, so that s the deal, and if went up doing this by suspension, we have to start calling him the suspension speaker. we should try to get it done the right way. there s not going support across the board among republicans because a lot of us want to reduce spending. the american people sent us here to reduce spending. we re $34 trillion in debt. we came to an agreement last year to cap spending. now we re going to blow past the cap. a lot of what this looks like is the same situation that then
