he third season of Motherland starts as it means to go on: with an âabsolute nitshowâ. As an official arrives to brief parents at the state primary school, every unravelling mother in the land will wish she didnât recognise herself. The nit expert urges parents to comply with the guidelines: âCombing ⦠shampooing ⦠combing again,â which is only marginally less laughable than the governmentâs âstay alertâ slogan it is satirising. But it is not too soon for the pandemic to get the Motherland treatment â if it came in a bottle, it would look, smell and perform precisely like nit shampoo.

FANS of Gavin & Stacey have been waiting months to find out the fate of the hit sitcom – and now James Corden has dropped the biggest hint yet that it could return.
But the show’s co-creator and star also had some bad news, because he says that if they do deliver another instalment it will probably be the last.

Of course, there have been varied depictions of mothers on screen for decades. Some, such as Roseanne or Nora Ephronâs film Heartburn, were even written by mothers themselves. There were the long-suffering, or straight-faced mothers such as Barbara Royle in The Royle Family or Pam Shipman in Gavin & Stacey; eye-rolling mothers such as Karen in Cold Feet or Sue in Outnumbered; the lovelorn single mums of Birds of a Feather; the formidable matriarch Peggy Mitchell in EastEnders; or the animated cottage loaf that was Ma Larkin in The Darling Buds of May. But lately more complex portrayals of motherhood have emerged, serving as sweetcorn-like nuggets of honesty in the nappy contents of popular culture.

The BBC has shared a first look at Joanna Lumley’s guest role in sitcom Motherland.
The Absolutely Fabulous actress, 74, will play Felicity, the “fairly poisonous” mother of Lucy Punch’s character Amanda.
The third series of Motherland, a comedy about the ups and downs of modern middle-class parenting, will feature a head lice breakout.
