Zi Char — meet and taste Singapore s delicious offerings
Zi Char meet and taste Singapore’s delicious offerings Christina Alpad, TMT © Provided by The Manila Times Hawker culture have become part of Singaporean identity that no well-meaning visit to this Southeast Asian country would be complete without dining at hawker centers. In fact, hawker has been officially added to the Unesco Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in December 2020. But besides the delicious chicken rice, satay or even xiao long baos from these hawker stalls, another delicious offering needs to be introduced to foreign palates and yes, that includes Filipinos who frequent Singapore. Zi Char (pronounced as cze-cha and translates to “cook and fry” in Hokkien) is a popular cooking style influenced by homecooked food. Zi Char dishes are mainly Chinese, but also have many influences from the diverse races and cultures in Singapore such as Malay, Indian and Peranakan.
