Singapore maritime decarbonistion centre established from 1 August

Photo: Marcus Hand Singapore’s plans accelerate the move towards zero carbon shipping are moving into action with the establishing of the Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD) from 1 August. The SGD120m ($90m) centre was announced it April with funding from the Maritime & Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and initial industry partners BHP, BW Group, Eastern Pacific Shipping, Foundation Det Norske Veritas, Ocean Network Express. Since the centre was announced the MPA said that 1 organisations ranging from shipping companies, classification societies, research centres, traders, energy players, terminal and tank operators, engineering companies, financial institutions to industry associations have expressed interest to collaborate with GCMD.

The city state has already vaccinated front line workers in the maritime and port industries, including foreign national seafarers who serve on vessels that operate in Singapore’s port waters such as tugboats and bunker tankers. “Our next move is to support international efforts to vaccinate oceangoing seafarers around the world,” Chee Hong Tat, Singapore’s Senior Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Transport, told International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) Global Trade webinar on Wednesday.
