Nelson mayor Rachel Reese said the subcommittee needed some education on the new national policy statement for urban development “because I don’t think the members of this committee . have got to grips with the NPS”. The second, and by far the longest, meeting of the week was Thursday’s Community and Recreation Committee. During the eight-hour meeting, the biggest news was the approval for the location of the long-awaited Stoke Youth Park, along with the 23 per cent increase in fees coming in July for council-owned cemeteries. Of the other items on the agenda, first up was a strategic presentation and update from the Nelson Centre for Musical Arts covering 2020 – with the outlook for 2021 being far more positive than was first feared despite Covid-19.
