SOUTH BENDÂ â Dozens of multicolored umbrellas filled the airspace at Studebaker Plaza, protecting benches, balloons and a life-size chess board from the potential precipitation of the cloudy April sky.
The colorful umbrellas instantly drew the eye of Notre Dame junior Alex DeMeritt who was driving through downtown South Bend on Friday afternoon.
âOh my God, this looks so cool,â DeMeritt exclaimed as she made her friend pull over so she could jump out and take pictures.
The array is part of the Hit Refresh campaign, an initiative put on by the cityâs Venues, Parks and Arts Department and Downtown South Bend Inc. to provide downtown visitors a chance to enjoy the spring weather and refresh from a year of COVID.

‘Tap into Spring during First Fridays in Downtown South Bend By: Maura Johnson
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Downtown South Bend is inviting Michiana to “Tap into Spring” for their April First Fridays event on April 2.
The event will celebrate the arrival of spring with an art installation in Studebaker Plaza, a Downtown Tap Tour featuring a variety of draught beer options, and a tap dance performance and lesson from the IU South Bend Kickline.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Spring has sprung, and South Bend Venues Parks & Arts invites you to get out and enjoy it!
South Bend VPA, in partnership with Downtown South Bend, Inc., is introducing a new campaign called “Hit Refresh,” which highlights several outdoor events in the community throughout April and May.
Included in the campaign is the Studebaker Plaza in downtown South Bend, which will be open seven days a week as an outdoor dining and entertainment space. Features like yard games, photo ops, fire pits, music, and more will shower the plaza in spring entertainment.
