“We’re not going to outrun the U.K. variant in the short run and that means there are more people infected. And that will translate into more deaths. It will also, unfortunately, double back and translate into more mutations, that could then lead to still more escape ability from vaccine immunity. It could lead to more problematic disease in children,” he said.
Clinical trials ongoing for kids
Despite the promising results of Pfizer’s trial, it will likely be months before widespread vaccination of children is possible.
“We could, during this time of not adequately vaccinating adults, we could get into mutations that make the disease more damaging in children,” he said.

With the Memphis Redbirds first game scheduled for May 4 and 901 FC beginning June 15 Craig Unger, president of both teams says fans will be allowed to attend.
“Currently our plan is for about 30% capacity,” said Unger. “AutoZone park holds about 10,000 people so we’re between 3,350 and that’s all provided 6-foot social distancing.”
Unger says as game day approaches specific guidelines will be released, and as vaccination numbers increase he hopes those guidelines will change.
Pfizer recently announced its vaccine is safe for kids ages 12 and up, and researchers reported those in the study developed high levels of antibodies. None of the 12- to 15-year-olds given the vaccine during the trial developed COVID-19, compared to 18 cases among those
who got a placebo shot.
The company is preparing to ask the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for emergency authorization to vaccinate kids 12 to 15. Moderna has trials underway for children, and Johnson & Johnson announced Friday it was expanding trials to include kids age 12 to 17.
“We share the urgency to expand the use of our vaccine,” Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla said in a statement, adding he hoped kids 12 to 15 would be able to be vaccinated before the next school year.
