Marijuana issue is a “tough sell” ELLSWORTH — Residents of Hancock County’s unorganized territories who spoke at a Dec. 1 Hancock County Commissioners’ meeting in support of the board “opting in” to allow commercial marijuana operations in the territories may be disappointed. Both newly sworn-in Commissioner Paul Paradis and longtime former sheriff and Commissioner Bill Clark said during the board’s first meeting of 2021 on Tuesday that they were not in favor of opting in. The board has three members. Municipalities have to “opt in” to allow marijuana businesses, whether medical or commercial, and so do Maine counties when it comes to the unorganized territories. And then there are decisions pertaining to which types of commercial marijuana businesses will be allowed. December 31st, 2020 | by: Stu Marckoon Unity Fire Arrest   (Unity) – Fire investigators have charged a 38-year old Unity man with attempted murder and arson for one of three fires in that town in the past 10-days.  The State Fire Marshal’s Office reports to Star 97.7 that they arrested Derek Creasy last night after searching an apartment and seizing a car in Unity.  That office, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, and the Waldo County Sheriff’s Department have been investigating the fires that began on December 22 nd at a trailer on Turner Court.  A second fire at the same trailer 4-days later and a fire at the Methodist Church on Depot Street have plagued the town.

McFarland is named Deputy of the Year - The Ellsworth American

McFarland is named Deputy of the Year ELLSWORTH The Hancock County Commissioners Tuesday, via the online meeting platform Zoom, recognized Hancock County Sheriff’s Deputy Jeff McFarland for being named the Maine Sheriff’s Association Deputy of the Year for 2020. McFarland was honored for his efforts in saving the life of a suicidal Brooklin man on April 24, 2019. Sheriff Scott Kane said McFarland was supposed to have been given the award last March, but the association’s annual banquet was cancelled due to the pandemic. McFarland and his wife, Cheryl, were present Tuesday morning with the sheriff. Kane read the nomination letter he’d sent to the sheriff’s association. On the day of the incident in April, the Brooklin man had climbed a tree with a belt and was threatening to kill himself. A Maine State Police trooper had been handling the incident and called for backup.

Jail reports inmate case of COVID-19 - The Ellsworth American

Jail reports inmate case of COVID-19 ELLSWORTH  While many of Maine’s county jails have been dealing with COVID19 outbreaks for months now, Hancock County just had its first COVID-19-positive inmate this week. The inmate was released on bail after a couple of days, according to Hancock County Sheriff Scott Kane. That was on Monday. “He was arrested for a domestic and we knew when he came in that he had tested positive,” Kane said. The inmate is related to someone at the Island Nursing Home in Deer Isle, which has been dealing with an outbreak since Thanksgiving week.
