While there is no doubt this year s Royal Highland Showcase cannot be a patch on the previous world-class livestock events we have all come to love and live for at Ingliston – due to the ongoing Covid-19 restrictions – it is however, one that has to be hugely admired and relished when the vast majority of such events have either been cancelled or postponed. Having the inspiration and enthusiasm to keep this year s show alive from the onset, when many were dropping off like flies, has not only been a massive undertaking by all the organisers and those behind the scenes, but also the breeders and exhibitors who have enabled The Royal Highland Showcase to finally come to fruition.
Young, enthusiastic and capable are the three words that spring to mind after speaking to the Moir brothers – William and David – who farm in partnership under Moir Livestock just outside Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire. The pair took on the lease of Newmill of Rathen when they were just 17 and 19 years of age, respectively, having worked on the family farm at Home Farm, Cairness, since they left school at 16. “The family farm went organic in 2006 and although it is a great market to be in, we just felt it wasn’t for us when we wanted to push our livestock numbers. Being organic is quite restrictive when it comes to buying in livestock and every day-to-day chores,” the brothers said, admitting that both gained outside experience before venturing out on their own.
World Record for Sheepdog Pup at Skipton Sale
Welshman Kevin Evans was top dog on price yet again at Skipton Auction Mart’s first online working sheep dog sale of 2021, selling three fully broken dogs for a combined £35,600, while his father David established a new world record price of £6,100 for an unbroken pup.
While none of the top-notch Evans trio was able to get near the £20,000 all-time world record price he established at Skipton last autumn with a red bitch, Henna, almost four-years-old, all three dogs at the latest sale achieved five-figure prices for the legendary breeder and triallist, who has been setting the working sheep dog world alight of late with his charges, many related to the handler’s high profile trials champions.
