Maharashtra Government Wants World Heritage Site Tag For 14 Forts - New Delhi Times - India s Only International Newspaper

May 24, 2021 Share The Maharashtra government has prepared and submitted a preliminary “serial” nomination for 14 forts in the state in order to seek the World Heritage Site designation. The forts were all constructed on the theme of Maratha Military Architecture during the reign of Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in the 17th century. The Ministry of Culture forwarded the list to the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) after a serial nomination by the Archaeological Survey of India. The nominations have been admitted into the UNESCO Tentative Lists for World Heritage Site designation. The World Heritage Convention’s operational guidelines state unequivocally that a country must send a tentative list containing an “inventory” of assets. Leading the state at the main official function, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray flew in a helicopter to the historic 1.6km high Shivneri Fort near Junar town of Pune, where Shivaji was born on February 19, 1630.
