Don Driver s artwork hung in the New Plymouth Airport terminal for 50 years.
It’s been out of sight since before lockdown, but a much-loved art work from New Plymouth’s old airport is set to return in a weather-proof version at its old stomping ground. The mural commemorating the 1933 landing of Charles Kingsford Smith s first passenger-carrying flight across the Tasman Sea, at Bell Block, was created by artist Don Driver and hung in New Plymouth Airport s main terminal for 50 years. When the new terminal went up, with art from Puketapu hapū, there was no space for Driver’s work, leading to multiple submissions to the New Plymouth District Council asking for space to be found.
“All travel and accommodation costs are out of my own pocket but you can get some good fares if you book well in advance,” he said. And although he wouldn t say how much he had spent on commuting, he said it was “expensive but manageable”. There are currently no direct flights from New Plymouth to Hawke’s Bay, which meant Wootton had to pass through Auckland. “Flying between the two cities is fairly easy as there are regular flights from both areas via Auckland and, once I arrive at New Plymouth, I am straight on the job.” Wootton oversaw the building of airport company Papa Rererangi i Puketapu Ltd into a $6m business pre-Covid and was the backbone behind the new $28 million terminal.
