“These drivers are heading directly into the path of on-coming vehicles travelling at high speed with no designated road space for them to drive into. The project is being led by New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi. It must be included in the Regional Land Transport Plan if Waka Kotahi is to seek funding for the project from the National Land Transport Fund.

Two people died and two were seriously injured after a car went the wrong way down Wellington Urban Motorway in January. A budget of $8.6 million has been set aside for it. The purpose of the project is to allow Waka Kotahi to implement a system across the Auckland motorway network that detects vehicles and warns drivers when entering motorway offramps against the flow of traffic.
Police responded to reports of a vehicle attempting to U-turn near the terrace tunnel.
A 32 year old man will appear in Wellington District Court this morning charged with failing to stop in a second incident involving spiking vehicles on the Wellington motorway this week. Police were called at 11.20pm on Wednesday after reports of a vehicle attempting to U-turn on the southbound lane of Wellington Urban Motorway near the Terrace tunnel, and started driving north. Police followed the car at 30 to 60 kilometres per hour from just past Aotea Quay after it completed the turn up State Highway 2. The driver was signalled to stop near Petone and spikes were deployed twice after it failed to stop.
LOCATION The Bolton goes about its stylish business amid the bureaucrats who stalk this tight axis of streets next to the Beehive. If that’s your buzz – or you like to “play spot the politician” – you’ll be in location heaven. Owner/founder Warwick Angus struck gold with this site: it’s bordered by the Botanic Gardens and the Bolton Street Memorial Park (formerly known as the Bolton Street Cemetery which was famously sliced into this side and that when the Wellington Urban Motorway ploughed through in the 1960s, causing some 3700 graves to be relocated).
