Unexploded ordnance (UXO) in a warship sunk in the Mekong River’s Kandal province in the early 1970s during the civil war is planned to be retrieved next week after the wreck’s exact location was determined.
This operation comes after the recent successful removal of UXO from a sunken ship in Kampong Cham province.
Mey Sophea, commander of the UXO Clearance Unit of the National Centre for Peacekeeping Force and Explosive Remnants of War Clearance, told The Post on April 22 that his divers had already determined the geography of the riverbed and would begin removing UXO from the warship next week.

Undergoing years of wars sabotaging its socioeconomic development efforts, and witnessing hundreds of thousands of people injured by landmines and bombs left from the wars, Vietnam is doing its best to support the United Nations Security Council in addressing such a big challenge and maintaining peace.
Although the war ended in 1975, the discovery of bombs, mines, and UXOs is still dragging on
It has been 12 years since farmer Dao Thi Lua from the central province of Quang Triâs Hai Lang district lost her three children.
âI lost everything, and a big scar in my heart remains and the wound will never heal,â said Lua, 63, who still lives in a shabby house together with an ailing 67-year-old husband.
What we do
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and at the same time promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.
Disposal teams have burned 1.6 tonnes of the 16 tonnes of unexploded ordnance (UXOs) that were retrieved from a warship sunk in the Mekong River in Kampong Cham province during the civil war period of the early 1970s. The remaining ordnance will be neutralised and preserved for museum displays.
Mey Sophea, head of the UXO Clearance Unit of the National Centre for Peacekeeping Forces and Explosive Remnants of War Clearance (NPMEC-ERW), said on April 6 that the specialist team only burned the old and decayed or rusty ammunition, since it would soon deteriorate anyways. Items burned included artillery rounds, mortar shells and bullets among other varieties.
