Richard Kimmel was drawn to the Lower East Side partly by “a lot of family history,” he said, including his great-grandmother, “who arrived at Ellis Island on the Fourth of July in 1898,” and made her way to the densely populated neighborhood that has long been a haven for immigrants of many origins, with Eastern European Jews predominating at the turn of the last century.

Family of man killed in shoot-out: Let us bury him before Xmas

RELATIVES of Joel Harracksingh, the man who was allegedly shot dead by police after a chase around the Queen’s Park Savannah, are pleading with authorities to release his body.
Relatives said Harracksingh s body remained at the mortuary at the Port of Spain General Hospital up to Wednesday. He was killed on Sunday.
The dead man’s sister, who did not wish to be named. said, “The body hasn’t reached Forensics yet. It is affecting the date of the funeral, because we need his death certificate and we need the documents from forensics to move forward. We were hoping to get him back by Tuesday. My mother wants to bury her son before Christmas.

Relatives of Joel Harracksingh want to know what really happened to him, after a man purporting to be a police officer apologised to Harracksingh’s mother, saying they intercepted the wrong car.
Harracksingh, 25, from Oxford Street, Port of Spain, was reportedly shot dead by police after an alleged car chase which started around the Queen’s Park Savannah and ended in St Ann s on Sunday.
Harracksingh’s sister, who did not wish to be named, told Newsday that from information the family received, they believe he was not armed when the police shot him.
