WOODFORDS, Calif. In the winter, the roughly three-hour drive from Alpine County’s main health clinic in Woodfords to the remote enclave of Bear Valley winds along snowy two-lane roads and over 8,000-foot mountain passes, circumventing the more direct route, which is closed for the season.
So to get a box of the frozen Moderna COVID-19 vaccine to the ski resort hamlet of about 100 people, the clinic has enlisted the sheriff’s department.
“It’s unreasonable for our staff to drive there, give a bunch of vaccines and drive back, especially with weather where there will likely be chain controls,” said Dr. Richard Johnson, the county’s public health officer.

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - During both the South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting and the El Dorado County Board of Supervisor meetings on January 5, questions were asked of the health care professionals as to when the public can expect to be vaccinated for COVID-19.
Barton Hospital President/CEO Dr. Clint Purvance told the Council that over 60 percent of the hospital s top tier have been vaccinated and they will be receiving their second round Tuesday or Wednesday. He said they have seen some minor reactions such as a sore are, but nothing different than what the studies showed on test groups.
