C Spire Fiber Accepts Pre-Orders for Gigabit internet in Tuscaloosa Share C Spire   TUSCALOOSA, Ala. C Spire Fiber is accepting consumer pre-orders now and has begun construction for its ultra-fast, fiber-based Gigabit internet access and related services in the Tuscaloosa County cities of Northport and Tuscaloosa and will soon expand into the unincorporated areas of the county. The broadband division of C Spire began construction on the next-generation technology today in four fiberhoods in the two towns with plans to pass thousands of homes in the county covering 50 more fiberhoods over the next several months. Service is planned for the first customers this summer.  C Spire Business also will begin offering fiber internet services for businesses in these markets in the coming months.

‘Day You’ll Never Forget’: Decade After Deadly Tuscaloosa Tornado, Recovery Is Uneven By Debbie Elliott  April 27, 2021 On April 27, 2011, one of the worst tornado outbreaks in U.S. history struck the Deep South. It was what forecasters call a Super Outbreak with at least 100 major, destructive tornadoes. More than 300 people lost their lives, and the rash of storms caused an estimated $10 billion worth of damage to homes, businesses, and government infrastructure. One of the cities hit hardest was Tuscaloosa, Ala. A nearly mile wide tornado cut a path though the town, killing 53 people, and injuring 1200 more. “Some people designate this as a disaster,” Mayor Walt Maddox said back then. “I think for the 93,000 citizens I represent, we would categorize this as a nightmare.”
