April 23, 2021 By Waterways Journal Lockport, La.-based Bollinger Shipyards announced April 19 the acquisition of the shipyard division assets and long-term contracts of Gulf Island Fabrication Inc. The acquisition includes a 437-acre waterfront facility in Houma, La., with 198,000 square feet of existing operations, fabrication and warehouse space, along with four floating drydocks. With the purchase, Bollinger has also acquired Gulf Island Fabrication’s contracts to build both the Towing, Salvage and Rescue Ships (T-ATS) for the U.S. Navy and regional class research vessels for the National Science Foundation and Oregon State University. John Bel Edwards, Port NOLA President and CEO Brandy Christian, and Greg Lehmkuhl, president and CEO of Lineage Logistics, gathered at the New Orleans Cold Storage (NOCS) facility on the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway in New Orleans East April 6 to break ground on a $42 million expansion project. Lineage Logistics, which globally operates more than 340 refrigerated facilities that account for more than 2.1 billion cubic feet of cold storage capacity, acquired New Orleans Cold Storage, which also operates a facility at the port’s Henry Clay Avenue Wharf, in 2020 as part of its acquisition of Emergent Cold. With roots going back to the 1880s, New Orleans Cold Storage is the oldest refrigerated cargo storage facility in the United States.

April 16, 2021 By Frank McCormack The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (LADOTD) held a virtual groundbreaking ceremony April 12 for the project to replace the Judge Perez Bridge, a vertical lift bridge over the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway (GIWW) in Belle Chasse, La., and the accompanying tunnel that passes under the canal. The bridge forms part of Louisiana Highway 23, the main roadway that connects all the communities on the west bank of Plaquemines Parish stretching about 70 miles between Belle Chasse and Venice to the rest of the greater New Orleans area. The Judge Perez Bridge opened in September 1968, while the tunnel opened to traffic in February 1956. The tunnel, innovative when it first opened, is thought to be the first tunnel in the world that did not require personnel to operate it. Houma Tunnel to close again part of next week, this time for inspection The Courier and Daily Comet The Houma Tunnel will close from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 20-22, the state Transportation Department says. This closure is needed in order to allow LADOTD’s inspection personnel to perform a comprehensive inspection of the entire tunnel, which includes structural, electrical and mechanical components, the agency said in a news release Tuesday. The department announced earlier that the tunnel would close from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. this Monday through Thursday for maintenance.  Alternate routes across the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway include the downtown Houma twin spans and the Dularge overpass.
