Montgomery: State lawmakers have inched closer to approving a ban on so-called vaccine passports that would require proof of COVID-19 vaccination to access services from a business or state agency. The House Health Committee voted Wednesday to send the bill to House of Representatives for a vote. It has already cleared the Senate. The bill contains a number of exceptions. Surgeons, dentists, medical institutions, hospitals and other health care providers are exempted. Universities could still require students to receive a vaccine; however, there would be exceptions for vaccines approved for “emergency use” by the FDA, as is the case with all three COVID-19 vaccines given in the United States thus far. The idea of vaccine passports is to have a document that shows a person has been inoculated against COVID-19. Vaccination rates among Southwest Florida s Black residents are far below state averages, so authorities are bringing the lifesaving shots closer to where they live and to places of worship.
The outreach is critical to overcoming residents reluctance to getting vaccinated out of mistrust of the health care system and misinformation about the COVID-19 vaccine, Black civic leaders say.
The challenge was made even harder when the federal government on April 13 paused use of the one-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine, which was seen as the best way to reach people who are reluctant to get immunized, especially those in diverse and underserved communities.
A total of 10,643 Collier residents have received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine; 56,320 had received the first of two doses of the other vaccines, and 93,089 had received both shots.
Breanna Johnson, of Collier County s health department office, said it offers only the Moderna vaccine at its primary vaccination site at the North Collier Regional Park. Our COVID-19 vaccine efforts will continue as normal, she said.
The Bay Pines VA Healthcare System has suspended its use of the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine but will continue to offer the Moderna vaccine at its clinic in Cape Coral. The C.W. Bill Young VA Medical Center outside St. Petersburg offers the Pfizer shots.

There will be 450 appointments available for the Moderna vaccine, which is authorized for people age 18 and older.
Tuesday’s walk-thru appointments are open 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., with arrival 10 minutes before your scheduled appointment time.
The North Collier Regional Park Exhibit Hall is at 15000 Livingston Road in Naples.
Reminder: Vaccine appointments are given to Florida residents who can provide proof of residency, such as a valid Florida driver license or identification card, or two of the following items: a deed, mortgage, monthly mortgage statement, mortgage payment booklet or residential rental or lease agreement that shows your Florida address.
