Galveston Wharves witness cargo business increase
Galveston Wharves in Galveston, Texas, reports that its cargo business totaled 4.3 million tons in 2020. This number exceeds the 2019 totals by 300,000 tons.
Rodger Rees, port director and CEO: “We had a strong year despite the pandemic thanks to the hard work by our port staff. We sought new business along with our business partners; the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA), stevedores and ship pilots. Cargo has always been an important part of our diversified business and continues to provide good-paying jobs.”
Grain and bean exports grew 128% to 1.5 million tons, accounting for almost a third of total tonnage in 2020. The port benefited from increased trade with global partners, which is expected to continue this year. General cargo was up 21% with 260,516 tons compared to 215,549 in 2019.
