Attempted murder charges filed after shootout

Green River Star -   Matthew Riley Culley A man the Green River Police Department alleges started a shootout with officers July 6 is facing nine felony charges that could lead to a lifetime in prison. Matthew Riley Culley, 33, of Green River, made his initial appearance Friday before Circuit Court Judge John Prokos and was issued a $1 million cash only bond. His charges consist of first degree attempted murder, four counts of aggravated assault, felonious restraint, two counts of interference with a peace officer and property destruction. The attempted murder charge alone could result in a lifetime sentence in prison without parole, as well as a potential fine of up to $10,000. The aggravated assault charges each carry a potential maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine, the same potential sentence the interference with a peace officer charges have.

Bond Set at $1 Million For Green River Man Facing Nine Felonies

GREEN RIVER A 33-year-old Green River man could face 85 years in prison and $90,000 in fines stemming from an incident that occured with member of the Green River Police Department on June 6. Matthew Riley Culley made his initial appearance today in front of Circuit Court Judge John Prokos to hear the charges brought against him by the Sweetwater County Attorney’s Office. While few details were discussed about the alleged incident, Prokos informed Culley about the nine felonies charges he’s facing. One count involves the attempted first-degree murder of Green River Police Sergeant Jesse Nielsen and two counts of aggravated assault and battery against Nielsen and GRPD Officer Zach Owens.
