Recent Overdoses Discussed on So Tier Close Up, Funds Announced

Substance abuse continues to be a major issue in the region and it’s one that has seen its own complications over the past year. Alarmingly, there have been a couple recent spikes in overdoses reported in Broome County while reports of substance abuse have been on the increase. Getty Images This week on the regular, local public affairs program, Southern Tier Close Up, Broome County Public Health Director Rebecca Kaufman talks about the problem, how the pandemic has impacted addiction disorders and what people can do to help. Kaufman says people struggling with substance abuse issues and their family and friends have found themselves left without the regular support services like counseling and peer group interaction due to the pandemic. In addition, isolation and depression have intensified many of the underlying drivers of the use of alcohol and medications.

Many areas, including Broome County, had to reschedule appointments since doses had not arrived in time for the Tuesday and Friday clinics last week.  Some regions said they would wait until they had the next batch of doses in-hand before re-booking residents for their shots. Meanwhile, the state is reporting 1 case of the South African strain and 18 cases of the U.K. variant.  Delaware County February 23 reported a case of the U.K. variant had been found in the county.  Last week Broome announced one confirmed case of the variant.

BU returns to rapid antigen testing as U.K. COVID-19 variant is found in Broome County Jordan Skube/Design Editor February 17, 2021 After one day of pool testing, Binghamton University’s COVID-19 testing procedure has reverted back to the BD Veritor antigen nasal swab COVID-19 test utilized during the fall 2020 semester. All students, faculty and staff who visit campus regularly are still mandated to be tested weekly, according to Ryan Yarosh, senior director of media and public relations at BU. Yarosh added that testing results will continue to be reported back to SUNY as well as all other appropriate agencies daily, but registration through the SUNY Upstate website is no longer required.
