The public notices issued by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) on axing a total of 3,366 trees for Namma Metro’s Phase II-A and Phase II-B projects received 350 responses, a majority of them were objections to felling trees. That is good news. But that’s not all of it.

Seven old trees along the Old Airport Road have already been axed to construct an underpass at Suranjan Das Road Junction.
On 14th March, BBMP workers had also begun pruning the branches of many large trees that have been earmarked for felling.
These heritage trees were once home to hundreds of birds, and shade for small animals and motorists.

A grade separator (
underpass), which has been proposed across
Ullal Main Road between Kengeri and Magadi Road, is likely to affect 83 trees. An expert committee constituted by the
High Court is expected to inspect the spot to examine the number of trees that can be saved from the axe. The project, motorists say, will ease the movement of traffic movement but they also urge officials to translocate these trees to a different place as a majority of them were planted just a few years ago.
