What? There’s a lone wolf columnist out there intent on making Daesh, these days already a horse and buggy issue, a subject of his column?
Well, yes. We are well-timed this month to reflect, in the cold light of hindsight, on the malign legacy of the mock-up caliphate that Daesh had birthed in our region, given the fact that it was almost exactly six years ago, on May 14, 2015, that the group’s leader, Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi, in an audio-taped message and in truculent language strangely at odds with his reedy voice, urged folks to “immigrate” to the “Islamic state” and “join the fight” in Iraq and Syria.
Anbar tribes key to security, political backing ahead of Iraq s October vote Following the introduction of a new electoral law and with many of the region’s population still looking more toward their tribes for protection than the central government, Iraq’s Sunni-dominant Anbar province is likely to be highly affected by tribal relations and figures in the October elections. COUNTER-TERRORISM: Rocks Of Doom
April 2, 2021: In western Iraq (Anbar province), the Syrian border has turned into another contested area where high-tech sensors are very useful detecting hostile border crossers. American and Iraqi forces cooperate to monitor the border and in late 2020 the Americans suggested using hidden night-vision digital cameras that covertly detect anyone crossing at night and can either store images on an SD card or transmit the data to a UAV high overhead which can then use its more powerful sensors to track the border crossers to their destination. The success of this technique led the Iraqis asking to expand the use of this tech as well as help replacing cameras discovered and removed or destroyed by smugglers, Islamic terrorists or even some civilians looking to make some money.
