While we still await the final outcome of NA-75, Daska, following a strong statement from the Election Commission of Pakistan over the missing of 20 presiding officers and the mysterious silence from the Punjab police and administration, the recent by-elections in all the four provinces could be an eye-opener for the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and its allies, particularly before the March 3 Senate elections.
There are few lessons for the opposition as well as for the ECP to learn before the high profile local bodies elections as per Supreme Court orders unless the government has other plans following the results of six by-elections, two in Punjab, two in Sindh, one in Peshin and one in Nowshera, which the ruling party lost. As for the three by-elections on NA seats, the PTI and the PPP won one each.

ISLAMABAD: Former JUI-F leader Maulana Mohammad Sheerani Khan on Tuesday announced the formation of his own faction of the Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam to be called JUI-Pakistan and said the policy of the new party would be to isolate Maulana Fazlur Rehman through ‘power of truth’.
The expelled members of the JUI-F held a meeting at the residence of Maulana Sheerani in the Barakahu area of Islamabad along with their supporters. Hafiz Hussain Ahmed participated in the meeting via a video link as he was not allowed to board a flight in Quetta for not having an updated Covid-19 test result.
DERA ISMAIL KHAN: Pakistan Democratic Movement president Maulana Fazlur Rehman on Friday said the multiparty opposition alliance would decide on Jan 2 about whether to take part in the coming by-elections or not.
Mr Fazl, who also heads the Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl, told reporters here that the opposition was united and its main demand was the prime minister’s resignation and free and fair elections in the country.
The PDM president said all member parties were completely complying with the decisions taken during the alliance meetings.
He said the opinion of one political party or a leader should not be linked with the affairs of the PDM.
Shifting sands

“When all the scaffolding is removed, it is our integrity that both defines us and identifies us. Men of integrity are like the rock of Gibraltar – steadfast and immovable. Men without it are like the shifting sands on the Sahara Desert – tossed to and fro by every variant wind of life.” – Ted R Callister
Unpredictability is an integral component of all human pursuits. Words spoken, promises made, dreams nurtured, distances traversed, destinations envisioned, hardships encountered, stories of valour or acts of cowardice – these are all wrapped in an aura of unpredictability. There are times when the cherished goals are attained, but there are also times when success remains an illusion. Yet, the journey must continue with an expression of gratitude by those who have reached their zenith, and sustenance of hope that times will inevitably show the path to those who may not have succeeded.
