At the end of the Vancouver Canucks’ farewell tour, coach Travis Green was asked after Saturday’s 4-1 win against the playoff-bound Edmonton Oilers about the play of Matthew Highmore and where the energy forward fits for next season.
“Well, as far as the future goes, you know, that s tough to say,” Green said.
There was more to his answer, but that quote applies universally to the Canucks during an end to their National Hockey League season that is so surreal Vancouver has three more meaningless regular-season games remaining after the Stanley Cup playoffs opened for others on Saturday night.

Free commuter train trips out of Evanston and other suburbs are about to reach the end of the line.
The Union Pacific Railroad, which provides crews and operates three routes for Metra, the transit agency, will have its onboard employees resume collecting and selling tickets as of June 1. Conductors are making announcements on the train about the upcoming return to “tickets, please.”
In an emailed statement to Evanston Now, UP spokesperson Robynn Tysver says, “Union Pacific employees have been in the train throughout the pandemic. Due to vaccine availability, we believe now is the appropriate time to resume pre-pandemic onboard fare collections, effective June 1.” Safety, she says, “is our highest priority.”
Before he was traded to the Anaheim Ducks, Ryan Kesler confirmed a deal was in place for the Vancouver Canucks to send him to the Pittsburgh Penguins seven years ago.
There had been many reports and rumours about what took place at the time, but this is the first detailed public recollection from Kesler, who wanted out of Vancouver. Kesler, who had a no-trade clause in his contract, was not moved at the 2014 trade deadline by then-general manager Mike Gillis.
The rumour at the time was that Canucks ownership blocked a potential trade at the deadline. Gillis was fired a month later, and new GM Jim Benning ended up settling for a trade with the Anaheim Ducks that summer.
Vancouver Canucks
After going through the best trade deadline deals in Canucks history, we need to keep it fair by going through the worst.
In fairness, there’s no loss on here that was as monumental as Cam Neely for Barry Pederson.

I would argue that the Canucks trade deadline wins were greater than their losses. As you can see below, there’s not a ton separating the worst trades here, forcing me to cheat a bit with the number one pick on this list.
The moral of the story of these trades shouldn’t be new…trading draft picks for old guys usually doesn’t work out.
