Centuries ago, thousands of Moravian and Quaker settlers came to the Piedmont in search of a better life, and their legacy lives on here in countless ways. WFDD listener James Sims had one specific contribution in mind and asked this question for
Carolina Curious.
“What are the oldest streets in the three Triad cities that are still in use today?” asks Sims.
WFDD reporter David Ford set out for answers beginning in the Wachovia Room at Old Salem’s Moravian Research and Archaeology Lab. Martha Hartley directs that research and says the answer is complicated, with many layers of history.

A Discount Outlet employee on Highway 153 said a man in his 30 s came in and put a Milwaukee Impact drill into his pants then fled the store without paying for the merchandise. A video could be available.
Police were called to the Comfort Inn at 2341 Shallowford Village Dr. where they saw video surveillance of a man walking through the lower level parking garage with a large backpack. The man is seen removing items from a large toolbox in the bed of a pick-up. He then went to the bushes and waited for a car that backed in and left within a few minutes. The complainant said the power and hand tools were in an unsecured toolbox and estimated the value at approximately $4,000. At this time there is no further information available. The surveillance is somewhat blurry and difficult to view.

Sixth & Vine Wine Bar and Restaurant at 209 6th St. in Winston-Salem will host a brunch event from noon to 3 p.m. July 18.
The event centerpiece is chef Belinda Smith-Sullivanâs recent cookbook, âLetâs Brunch,â that will provide Sixth and Vine chef Ebony Warfield with plenty of options for a special menu for diners. Smith-Sullivan, who has been busy establishing a residence in Winston-Salem during the pandemic, will be on hand to sign copies of âLetâs Brunch,â and visit with diners. Popular local chef, Michael Spencer, will be stepping outside his usual persona to provide music under the Sixth and Vine gazebo.
