Hurt revises vegetation ordinance, hears speeding concerns

HURT, Va. — Hurt Town Council held its monthly business meeting Thursday, July 15, with one of the main outcomes being revision of the town s ordinance (Code Section 10-17) regulating overgrown vegetation on properties within Hurt’s corporate limits.   The action comes after a few months of discussion and review, along with research and preparation of draft documents by Town Attorney John Eller.  A public hearing was held for Council to receive feedback on the proposal and following only moderate discussion among councilmembers, the measure was approved unanimously.   Although no one chose to speak about specifics of the ordinance, Jeff Blaesing, who resides on Main Street in sight of the new Staunton River Bridge, voiced concerns about overgrowth along a VDOT easement at his property.

SRRIFA takes final steps toward Staunton River Plastics project

HURT, Va. — After more than a year since its announcement and multiple delays attributed to Covid-19 effects, “Project Emotion” − a moniker for the Staunton River Plastics (SRP) facility slated for construction at Southern Virginia Multimodal Park (SVMP) in Hurt − continues inching ever closer the eve of its groundbreaking.  The Staunton River Regional Industrial Facility Authority (SRRIFA) Board of Directors met May 25 in Chatham.  A sizable part of their agenda consisted of ratifying key documents leading up to commencement of actual site preparation and construction. Five resolutions were considered that would:  (1) amend an existing performance agreement to reflect changes in financing; (2) approve a subdivision plat developed by engineers for the parcel of SVMP land; (3) exercise SRRIFA’s option to acquire the tract from Hurt Partners LLC (current SVMP owners) and in turn resell it to Pittsylvania County Industrial Development Authority (

Hurt to host community social event for Memorial Day

HURT, Va. (Altavista Journal) — The Town of Hurt is holding a community social Saturday, May 29. The picnic-style get-together will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Roosevelt Mattox Park adjacent to Town Hall.  The purpose of the event is honoring and remembering U.S. military personnel who lost their lives while serving our country. In keeping with Covid safety measures, food will be pre-packaged in closable trays.  Each will contain pork barbeque, a hot dog, baked beans, potato salad and assorted condiments.  Bottled water and canned drinks will also be included. Entertainment will consist of local musical talent, including Audie Meadows, an Elvis impersonator. During intermission at 2 p.m. a moment of silence will be observed in honor of those veterans who paid the ultimate sacrifice, followed by a short commentary from Mayor Gary Hodnett to recognize and appreciate living veterans.
