$14 9M from Ottawa to create affordable housing units in Edmonton

EDMONTON Edmonton will receive an additional $14.9 million from the federal government to create approximately 68 new affordable housing units. The city aims to create 68 units, with a goal of 600 affordable housing units by next year. The federal dollars are being dispersed to cities through the Rapid Housing Initiative (RHI) delivered by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation under the National Housing Strategy. “Every Canadian deserves a safe and affordable place to call home,” said Minister of Families, Children and Social Development Ahmed Hussen. He said the money announced Tuesday, will go a long way to support those who need it most by quickly providing new affordable homes for vulnerable individuals and families in Edmonton to keep them safe.

The City of Edmonton is also looking at options to privatize bus cleaning which could lead to layoffs of more than 100 employees. Photo by Azin Ghaffari /Postmedia Article content Why does the city again choose one of the lowest-paid groups of employees to privatize and present this decision as if this will improve efficiencies, save us money and then scare us with otherwise having to raise property taxes. This is hokum and we are tired of it. The most current similar rationale was the aides in long-term care facilities and we still are dealing with that disastrous management decision.

Letters May 23: Will Sohi s Liberal past hurt his chances of becoming mayor?

Article content Just not ready? So Edmonton’s esteemed Amerjeet Sohi is looking at becoming the mayor of Edmonton. He is an ex-city councillor and an ex-Liberal MP. Before Mr. Sohi became an MP he was just voted in as a city councillor, he then ran for the Liberal party of Canada and cost the Edmonton tax payers $300,000 for a byelection after he won the Liberal MP seat. As a newly minted Liberal MP our illustrious MP Sohi spent $835,000 redecorating his new digs in Ottawa, the combined costs to taxpayers from Mr. Sohi is $1,135,000 dollars. Mr. Sohi as a Liberal MP had helped to harm Alberta’s economy by voting for Liberal-backed bills that hurt Alberta’s economy. Mr. Sohi has never stood up for Alberta when he was an MP. How many billions has Mr. Sohi kept from Alberta’s economy from his actions as a Liberal MP? What Edmonton needs is a fiscally conservative leader the socialist and progressive people that are on city council have NO idea of what it means to be fiscally

File photo. Photo by Ian Kucerak /Postmedia Article content I was reminded of the pot calling the kettle black after listening to Mayor Iveson’s comments about his disappointment on government responses to COVID-19. The City of Edmonton can also share in this poor response to the pandemic. For over a year, maskless individuals continue to huff, puff, and sweat their way repeatedly up and down the stairs leading in and out of the river valley. They do so mere inches from those of us using the stairs for the intended purpose for which they were constructed. This, despite signs (put up by the City of Edmonton) telling everyone “Do not use the stairs f
