AUSTIN, Texas â Police in Texas say theyâve arrested a former sheriffâs deputy wanted in the shooting deaths of three people.
USA TODAY
AUSTIN, Texas – The vast, tense manhunt across the state for a former sheriff s deputy suspected of killing three people in a shooting rampage ended Monday on a quiet rural road a few miles from the scene of the carnage.
The deadly shooting spree Sunday was the latest of several across the nation, including one hours earlier in Kenosha, Wisconsin, that left three people dead.
Mass killings have claimed four or more American lives every week for the past six weeks, leaving communities overcome with shock and grief.
Stephen Nicholas Broderick, 41, was arrested in nearby Manor after authorities received two 911 calls around 7:30 a.m. about a man walking along the road. Manor Police Chief Ryan Phipps, who released a video of the arrest, said Broderick had a pistol in his waistband when apprehended but offered no resistance.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) A manhunt for a former Texas sheriff’s deputy suspected in the fatal shooting of three people in Austin ended Monday when authorities said he was arrested without incident about 20 miles (32 kilometers) from the scene of the weekend attack.
Prosecutors said they would pursue capital murder charges against Stephen Broderick, 41, who was being held without bail at the Travis County jail.
Interim Austin Police Chief Joseph Chacon said Broderick was suspected in Sunday s deaths of two women and one man, all of whom Broderick knew.
Police initially told Austin residents who lived nearby to shelter in place, but they lifted that request later Sunday when they said it was unclear whether Broderick was still in the city.
Chacon said that Broderick was a former deputy with the Travis County sheriff s office, which is based in Austin.
Travis County District Attorney Jose Garza said in a statement that Broderick had been arrested for sexual assault of a child last June and was released on $50,000 bond. He said that the district attorney s office on Sunday filed a motion to revoke that bond.
