New event to bring Western Canada s best U30 curlers together | 620 CKRM The Source | Country Music, News, Sports in Sask

By Mitchell Blair Jul 21, 2021 | 4:04 PM In an attempt to address what is thought to be a gap in curling, Saskatchewan’s men’s curling champ is one of three to get a new event organized. Matt Dunstone, four-time Saskatchewan junior men’s champ Rylan Kleiter and CURLSASK’s Dustin Mikush are looking to create more opportunities for the game’s rising stars once they exit the junior ranks and have created an event called “Best of The West”.  It will see eight men’s teams, eight women’s teams and eight doubles team competing in Saskatoon in April of 2022 with a purse of almost $40,000 up for grabs.

Saskatoon to host U30 west curling championship

“Our main goal for the SGI Canada Best of the West is to help aid in these young athletes’ development by providing opportunities to compete against the best U30 Western teams and by providing increased exposure for the teams through professional live streaming,” said Mikush, where they partnered with IKS Live in live-streaming the entire competition. “I think it is awesome that we have an opportunity for our younger Canadian curling stars in the Western side of our country to show off their sponsors and give themselves a chance to represent their province at the exact same time,” said Dunstone.

Sheet Show: Profanity can sometimes slip out on televised curling broadcasts

The normally staid Tim Hortons Brier broadcast on TSN was rocked by a curler s F-bomb last month just as the traditional curling background music started after a commercial break. It wasn t clear what caused the frustration. Another F-bomb was dropped this week in preliminary play at the Princess Auto s Players Championship. The profanity, with a description of poop thrown in for good measure, could be heard on the Sportsnet broadcast after a player s microphone pack became dislodged during some heavy sweeping. Unlike most sports, curlers wear microphones on the ice during top-flight competitions. Sometimes the heat of battle can trump language control.
