This is the Most Michigan Part-Time Job Ever
It s not exactly a corner office, but what a view! Michigan Department of Transportation is looking to hire toll takers for the Mackinac Bridge.
It s listed as a non career state job, but it sure sounds like fun. The official job description for a toll taker reads, greet customers, collect fares, check truck permits to ensure compliance with bridge rules and regulations, assist in taking surveys, help law enforcement agencies in locating sought vehicles and delivering emergency messages. Michigan Department of Transportation has posted three openings for toll takers, each limited to 129 hours per month, 1,040 hours each calendar year. Your office is at one end of one of the world s longest suspension bridges: the Mighty Mac.
When Gephyrophobia Strikes, You Still Have to Cross the Bridge I thought I was going to have a heart attack. The fear of bridges is real, and it can be paralyzing. But there are ways to get to the other side. BuyenlargeGetty Images
Cathy McMahon was in her early 40s when she had a panic attack while driving across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. The Maryland bridge has a reputation for being frightening. But McMahon had been driving over it regularly since she was 17 and had never experienced even a moment of anxiety despite that it can be found on more than a few “scariest bridges” lists. At 4.3 miles, with narrow lanes, no shoulders, and low guardrails, it connects the Washington, DC, area with the Delaware and Maryland beaches on the Eastern Shore. At its highest point, the bridge spans rise to more than 200 feet over the bay below. As you drive, a gentle curve makes it looks like the road ahead just disappears that there’s no end in sight.

Steve Janke shot this eight-point buck November 21 on the Mighty Deer Lick Farm in Powers. The deer was estimated to be three years old.
ESCANABA During the 2020 firearm deer season the Michigan Department of Natural Resource field office in Escanaba registered 520 deer, 10% less than 2019 deer check totals, and 17% below the 10 year average established from 2011-2020. 414 of deer harvested were big bucks. Michigan DNR Wildlife Technician Colter Lubben said the comparison is preliminary at this time, and cited several factors in generating these numbers. One factor was state restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Other influences included reduced check station hours, reduced disease surveillance and poor weather conditions.
