Muskogee City Council Votes To Approve Anti-Hate Crime Ordinance
Muskogee City councilors unanimously voted to approve an anti-hate crime ordinance Monday.
This is the first ordinance of its kind in the city. The adoption makes it a misdemeanor to commit certain crimes meant to intimidate or harass someone based on race, religion, sexual orientation, and gender identity. Those crimes would be punishable by up to half a year in jail and a $750 fine.
The ordinance was considered after a clerk at a Muskogee convenience store was verbally harassed with discriminatory slurs and threatened in June. The responding officer told the victim nothing formal could be done because the language was not covered by a hate crime ordinance.
