During the hearing of a petition filed by a number of eminent academicians, rights activists and scholars against the promulgation of HEC Ordi­nance that reduced the term of chairman from four to two years and ‘curbed’ its autonomy, Attorney General (AG) Khalid Jawed Khan informed an IHC bench that the prime minister is determined to govern the country through parliamentary democracy.

Activists and rights groups asserted that the crackdown on civil society organisations is part of the authorities broader plan to silence dissent, reported DW News Agency. Local and international nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) have been under pressure in Pakistan for many years, but suppression under the government of Prime Minister Imran Khan has intensified as he ordered 18 foreign NGOs to close their operations and leave the country since 2018.
