BWF cancels last event offering Tokyo 2020 qualification points Thursday, 13 May 2021
The Badminton World Federation (BWF) and the Singapore Badminton Association (SBA) have cancelled next month s Singapore Open, the last tournament offering qualification ranking points for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
The event had been scheduled to take place from June 1 to 6, but rising COVID-19 cases globally has led to the BWF and the SBA to call off the event due to challenges with incoming travellers from countries around the world.
There are no plans for the Singapore Open to be rescheduled. All attempts were made by the organisers and BWF to provide a safe tournament environment for all participants, the BWF said in a statement.

BALTIMORE, April 15, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) Slinger Bag Inc

Initially started in Singapore, Tennis Bot has expanded across the Asia-Pacific Region and now serves customers located in 14 different countries including Malaysia.
The Singapore Open cancellation comes as a rude shock for Saina Nehwal and Kidambi Srikanth as the Super 500 tournament was the last chance for them to qualify for the upcoming Tokyo Olympics in July.
PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Open badminton championships has been postponed indefinitely and it will no longer be an Olympic Games qualifying event.
The Badminton World Federation (BWF) said the second-tier World Tour event can no longer be held on its scheduled May 25-30 dates due to the recent spike in Covid-19 cases in the country. All attempts were made by the organisers (Badminton Association of Malaysia) and BWF to provide a safe tournament environment for all participants, but the recent surge in cases left no choice but to postpone the tournament, said BWF in a statement on Friday (May 7). BWF can confirm the rescheduled tournament will no longer take place in the Olympic qualifying window. New tournament dates will be confirmed at a later date.
