Robert Armstrong, 45, called 999 on November 24 while walking along Steelworks Road, in Ebbw Vale. Speaking to the police call handler, Armstrong threatened to kill council officers and members of the Muslim community, particularly those of Pakistani origin, as well as threatening to blow up the Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council offices and a mosque. Armstrong told the operator: “I have had enough. I have had a gutsful of lockdown. My issues are with the government, the police, and the NHS. “I am going to f up as many lives as I can. Blaenau Gwent council’s managing director will oversee the Senedd election in May for the South Wales East region.
The South Wales East region covers eight constituencies. They are Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Islwyn, Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney, Monmouth, Newport East, Newport West and Torfaen. Welsh Government minister Ms James said: “I would like to thank those who have agreed to take on the role of regional returning officers for this year’s Senedd Cymru elections. “These elections will be particularly challenging as they are combined with the Police and Crime Commissioner elections but, more importantly, they will be the first Senedd elections for the newly enfranchised group of young people and qualifying foreign nationals. “There is also the additional challenge of ensuring the election can be run safely in light of the on-going pandemic. This is a significant personal commitment for those who have agreed to take on this role and I am grateful we will have the benefit of their knowledge and experience.”
The deputy minister for housing and local government, Hannah Blythyn welcomed the renovation. “This building has real historical significance and its renovation will benefit the local community, act as a community hub, and increase footfall to the town centre,” she said Completed over three years, the building will be used as an open access multi-functional space for educational classes, training, seminars, meetings, and include a heritage centre which will tell the story of the building. The first floor will comprise of four offices, available for rent on a flexible basis to create flexible working space that small and third sector businesses require; as well as complete renovation and restoration of the building’s exterior.
