Organizers have dubbed the theme of the convention to be “Stronger Together.” In a news release the organization has stated that “COVID-19 has shown that while municipal leaders can’t physically be together, they can still work together to build stronger communities by sharing information and acting with one voice to ensure Saskatchewan’s hometowns have the resources they need.” While we are disappointed we don t have an opportunity to meet with you in person over the next few days, going virtual was the only way we could ensure we could still come together in some way, said Randy Goulden, 2021 convention chair in her convention remarks.

International travel has not been deemed illegal during the pandemic, but it is strongly advised against by all levels of government, and requires a mandatory two week quarantine upon returning to Canada. When asked about his trip, Barnhart said that travel was a safe option for him and his wife. Roger Hayward, Vice President of Towns is Barnhart’s only opponent at this time. However some backlash on the former Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan’s decision to travel has been reported, with Prince Albert’s Mayor quoted as saying the City was considering ending its membership with Muni-Sask.

Municipalities of Saskatchewan s Board of Directors disappointed in president s decision to travel

  “The Board of Directors is disappointed in President Barnhart’s decision to travel abroad,” said Mayor Rodger Hayward, Municipalities of Saskatchewan’s Vice-President of Towns. “As municipal leaders, we have a duty to lead by example and keep our communities safe by following public health measures and recommendations.”   Following a meeting on January 8, Municipalities of Saskatchewan’s Board of Directors formally requested that President Barnhart respond to Municipalities of Saskatchewan’s membership, and the public, regarding his decision to travel.   “Saskatchewan’s hometowns have been working diligently to support their residents during the COVID-19 pandemic, and Municipalities of Saskatchewan has been working diligently to support our hometowns,” said Mayor Hayward. “We strongly believe that everyone should be doing their part to reduce the transmission of COVID-19.”
