YouTube Premium is a solid option if you want to pay to skip through its often harrowing advertising. But it’s about $US12 ($16) a month on top of a whole host of other subscription services you’re probably already paying for. The price includes access to YouTube Music, offline downloads, and background playback. But for everyone else who doesn’t want those extras, the current subscription price may be too much.
YouTube is working on a cheaper version of YouTube Premium that eschews the extra features in favour of just the ad-blocking. It’s called Premium Lite, and it’s currently being tested in a few European countries, including Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden.

If you re a YouTube user without a premium subscription, you may have noticed the rampant increase in ads on the platform. For those who want a cleaner experience, YouTube offers a Premium subscription that offers ad-free videos, background playback, the ability to download videos, YouTube Music Premium, and YouTube Originals. However, it now appears that the company is trialing a cheaper Premium Lite subscription in Europe.
YouTube has confirmed to The Verge that the Premium Lite subscription is currently being trialed in some European countries including Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden. It offers ad-free viewing for €6.99/month (~$8.3/month), and does not include any of the other benefits offered by YouTube Premium.
American tech giant Google handles a more affordable premium subscription tier for YouTube. Google promises to offer ad-free viewing without YouTube Premium and other features like offline downloads or background playback.
The new Premium Lite plan confirmed the test offering in a statement given to The Verge. Premium Lite is currently being tested in Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden. A YouTube spokesperson said, We re testing a new offering to give users even more choice: Premium Lite costs EUR 6.99/month and it includes ad-free videos on YouTube. This premium subscription includes ad-free viewing across YouTube s main app on the web, iOS, Android, smart TVs, and games consoles, as well as in the YouTube Kids app. However, music lovers won t be enjoying this feature as YouTube Music benefits like ad-free listening, and it doesn t include Premium.
