This Just In: Raimondo looks to 2021; storm looks like the real deal Michael McDermott, The Providence Journal © The Providence Journal This Just In. Good afternoon and welcome to This Just In. I m Mike McDermott, managing editor of The Providence Journal. I like to follow recipes (when I was a kid I once tried to make my own Coca-Cola it didn t work out), so I thought it was interesting to read the list of ingredients in the Pfizer vaccine. But we re not encouraging you to try to make it at home.  Gov. Gina Raimondo has had to face excruciating choices all year, and more are on the way as the state looks ahead to 2021. The governor spoke with The Journal State House team of Katherine Gregg and Patrick Anderson about her plans for taxes, nursing home regulation, marijuana legalization, and much more.

Providence Public Schools moving to distance learning ahead of break

PROVIDENCE Public schools in Providence will shift to distance learning Dec. 21 to 23 before students go on their holiday break. After the break ends, distance learning will continue through Jan. 6, and students will then phase back to their current schedule, said a district spokeswoman, Laura Hart. The incorporation of greater distance learning just before and after the break is a scheduling option offered recently by the Rhode Island Department of Education, she said. On another front, students can expect distance learning on Thursday of this week if a snowstorm, expected overnight Wednesday into Thursday, closes buildings.

GoLocalProv | A Pause is Needed in Charter School Expansion

Friday, December 11, 2020   Rep. Amore PHOTO: GoLocal In this, the season of the “pause”, I urge the RI Board of Education to take a step back and pause before taking up consideration and approving the recent requests to significantly expand charter schools in Providence and throughout the state.  Traditional public schools serve the overwhelming majority of students in their communities and Providence students deserve the opportunity to see the turnaround promised to them fully underway before resources are diverted.  Significantly expanding charter schools or seats was not highlighted or even mentioned as a strategy for improvement in the Turnaround Action Plan for Providence Public Schools (TAP).
