Scientists create a sonic black hole in the lab, confirm Stephen Hawking s theory

Physicists in Israel have devised a black hole analogue only, rather than being a gravitational fortex that doesn’t allow light to escape, this particular object is a sonic black hole that doesn’t allow sound waves to escape. In the process, the researchers measured the long-theorized Hawking radiation, with important consequences for physics. A black hole is a region of spacetime where gravity pulls so strongly that even light cannot get out once it crosses a point of no return, known as the event horizon but you probably knew that already. What may be new to you is that almost 50 years ago, Stephen Hawking proposed a more nuanced view whereby black holes can also generate light.

Bose Einstein Condensate: What Is The Fifth State of Matter ?

SCIENCEALERT STAFF Sometimes referred to as the fifth state of matter , a Bose-Einstein Condensate is a state of matter created when particles, called bosons, are cooled to near absolute zero (-273.15 degrees Celsius, or -460 degrees Fahrenheit).   At such low temperatures there is insufficient energy for the particles to move into positions that might cause their distinct quantum characteristics to interfere with one another.  Without differences in energy to set particles apart, the whole group comes to share the same quantum identity, effectively becoming a single super-particle cloud, operating under its own rules.  How was the Bose-Einstein Condensate discovered? In the early days of quantum physics, in the early 20th century, Indian physicist and mathematician Satyendra Nath Bose reinterpreted statistics on the relationship between light and temperature by applying recent advances in quantum theory.

What We Learned This Year from Space Station Science – Parabolic Arc

HOUSTON (NASA PR) Dozens of experiments are going on at any given time aboard the  International Space Station. Research conducted in 2020 is advancing our understanding in areas of study from Parkinson’s disease to combustion. Space station research results published this year came from experiments performed and data collected during the past 20 years of continuous human habitation aboard the orbiting laboratory. Between October 1, 2019, and October 1, 2020, the station’s Program Research Office identified more than 300 scientific publications based on space station research. Here are the highlights of what we learned this year about groundbreaking space station science: Small-scale drug delivery ESA astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti works with nanoparticle samples in the Kubik facility aboard the space station.
