Letter: Portsmouth shares similarities to Tulsa s racist past

Letter: Portsmouth shares similarities to Tulsa s racist past Portsmouth Herald June 5 - To the Editor,  The second part of the Tulsa, Oklahoma, tragedy was that after it was rebuilt from the ashes of the 1920 racist massacre, the area was deemed an eyesore and was taken by urban renewal and eminent domain. It was leveled and a new highway was installed through it. Sound a bit familiar?  If you were Italian and made your home in the north end of Portsmouth, a theme of cultural/racial prejudice was at work. Credits to Dorothy Vaughan. Under the guise of urban renewal and eminent domain, this part of our city was taken away from its residents and leveled. Perhaps some of the Portsmouth Herald s readers could inform us about who profited from this forced removal. It’s obvious somebody did and they likely were not any of the former residents. So, in reading of Tulsa and you say it couldn’t happen here; It can and, in a different way, it did.
