Go ahead and add a hard-nosed playoff victory to the Cougarsâ ever-expanding list of accomplishments in 2020.
Canyonâs odyssey from 0-10 to 10-1 took center stage as the Cougars defended their home field during a thrilling 20-17 victory against Pflugerville on Thursday night. Canyon survived a late comeback bid by the Panthers, who trimmed a 20-3 deficit down to just three points with 3:52 left to go.
Pflugerville later took possession at its own 30-yard line with 21 seconds left and advanced to midfield on a quick pass to Jake Iloka. However, moments later senior linebacker Alex Bouloubasis put the finishing touches on the win by sending receiver Donald Springs to the turf with a crushing hit.
When head coach Joe Lepsis arrived on the scene at Canyon back in the spring of 2018, he inherited a program that had fallen on hard times.
The Cougars were mired in a difficult stretch that had led to three consecutive 2-8 finishes and a combined 4-16 record in district play. The playoffs seemed to be an unreachable goal as participation lagged and the losses continued to mount.
However, Lepsis met with the class of 2021 â then freshmen â throughout offseason sessions and let them know they had the opportunity to change everything.
âI explained it to them,â Lepsis said. âLook, youâre going to have to outwork people, youâre going to have to learn what that looks like and feels like, but if youâre willing to do that, then you guys have a chance. Somebody is going to do it â why not you?â
