Our America: Women Forward is special series celebrating women across this country through stories of their perseverance, resilience, triumph, hope, achievement, strength and power. We will break down the disparities that challenge progress and the systemic sexism at the root of it all. You ll meet mothers, daughters, sisters and friends; innovators, teachers, gamechangers, power players, explorers, athletes and everyday heroes. The stories will begin to air on Eyewitness News at 4pm on March 8 and will culminate in a one-hour documentary that will air Saturday, March 13.

SKOKIE, Ill. (WLS) Bushra Amiwala became the youngest Muslim to hold office in the United States when she was elected to a Skokie school board at age 21. And that s just the start.
Amiwala is a daughter of immigrants and a rising politician. In 2018, she lost a primary race for Cook County Commissioner, but her parents support did not waver. It was her first time running for office.
She said her family has been a continuing source of inspiration for her to move forward, especially her father, who immigrated to the U.S. from Pakistan. I just want to do whatever I can to make them proud, to make them know that they made the right decision coming to this country, she said. They made the right decision to move to Skokie. They made the right decision to raise their kids in an environment away from their family, their community, what they were used to because they wanted us to have a better life with more opportunity.
âOur America: Women Forward,â a multiplatform docu-series produced by ABC-owned television stations, celebrates women across the country, sharing their stories of perseverance, hope and triumph.
The docu-series, set to premiere on International Womenâs Day March 8, also highlights the contributions of Indian American Pooja Jesrani, who is the first South Asian woman NASA flight director.
Viewers tuning in to their local ABC newscast will meet women from their communities rising above obstacles and barriers rooted in sexism to achieve personal and professional success, said ABC.
Since the first NASA flight director was named in 1958, there have fewer than 100 flight directors. Flight directors are responsible for leading teams of flight controllers, research and engineering experts, and support personnel around the world, and making the real-time decisions critical to keeping NASA astronauts safe in space.

Share: While some women are breaking the glass ceiling, others have been forced to take a step back as the COVID-19 pandemic has triggered a so-called shecession.
In January 2020, women outnumbered men in the United States workforce. In December 2020, women accounted for nearly 90% of the jobs lost. Black women and Latinas have been hit especially hard by unemployment.
But the job problem goes even deeper. In order to be counted as unemployed, you have to be actively looking for work but more than 2 million women have left the labor force during the pandemic, and they re not looking for work because they are staying home to care for children or other family members.
