Two kinds of light - The Hindu

Two kinds of light Updated: May 09, 2021 21:38 IST Updated: Share Article AAA When Bhooma Devi told Brahma that She could not bear the burden of the Earth, Brahma, accompanied by Siva and the celestials, asked Lord Narayana for help. They went to the Lord, who was reclining on the milky ocean. The Lord assured them of help, and told them about the Krishna avatara, which He was going to take. Parasara, Vyasa and Suka have all described this. The story then goes on that the Lord shed two hairs one white, one black, and that Balarama came from the white hair and that Krishna came from the dark hair. But is this the correct interpretation of the sloka describing the incident? Quoting from Engalazhvan’s commentary, V.S. Karunakarachariar explained that one should not interpret the word ‘kesa’ to mean hair. What the sloka indicates is that two kinds of light emanated from Lord Narayana.

Desika s pen picture - The Hindu

Desika’s pen picture Updated: May 03, 2021 22:14 IST Updated: Share Article AAA Bhooma Devi asked for Brahma’s help, because She was overburdened. Brahma, Siva and the celestials approached Lord Narayana, who was reclining on the milky ocean. There Brahma worshipped the Lord by reciting Purushasukta. Purushasukta says that the world owes its very existence to Him. It is His mercy which is responsible for the world and the many life forms in it. The Lord has a certain attribute, which is so strong, that He cannot go against it. He is bound by it. That powerful characteristic of His is His daya, said V.S. Karunakarachariar, in a discourse. To appeal to that quality of daya, Brahma recited the Purushasukta. Srimad Bhagavatam says that the Lord’s response was whispered by Him into Brahma’s ears.

Reducing Earth s burden - The Hindu

Reducing Earth’s burden Updated: April 20, 2021 22:26 IST Updated: Share Article AAA Why did Lord Narayana choose to live among cowherds in His Krishna avatara? It was because He wanted to show that He was going to lessen the Earth’s burden, said V.S. Karunakarachariar, in a discourse. Bhooma Devi’s burdens were increasing, for kings who ruled lacked righteousness. So, She took the form of a cow and went to Brahma for help. There were tears in Her eyes, and She looked worn out. She prayed that She should be relieved of Her burden and that good kings should rule the Earth.
