Perched halfway up the cobblestoned point at Punta Roca, one of El Salvador’s many world-class righthanders, there’s a modest wooden shack offering cold coconuts and beer for thirsty surfers. Stray cows roam the dirt parking lot, bellowing from time-to-time. Young kids chase each other through the fields of palm trees. And everyone’s eyes are always locked on the wave – especially when hometown hero, Bryan Perez, paddles out.
The Olympic trials for surfing are being held in El Salvador. The seeds for this were planted decades ago by young Californians looking for good waves.
