Parkside public inquiry decision to be made this month

The virtual public inquiry into the plans took place at the beginning of the year. The first half of the public inquiry dealt with the phase one application, with the second half looking at the £40 million Parkside Link Road scheme. The controversial proposals to redevelop the former colliery were originally submitted in January 2018 by Parkside Regeneration LLP, a joint venture between commercial developers Langtree and St Helens Borough Council. The Planning Inspectorate has confirmed that the target date for the decision from the secretary of state is August 26. St Helens Borough Council granted outline planning permission in December 2019, while also giving the green light for the Parkside Link Road project, which is seen as a key element to unlocking the potential of the site.

St Helens Chamber and TfN backs Parkside Colliery plans

An overhead view of how the site could look ST HELENS Chamber of Commerce and Transport for the North have given their backing to the regeneration of the derelict Parkside Colliery site in Newton-le-Willows, citing it as critical  to the region’s future economic growth. Secretary of State Robert Jenrick is set to rule on whether the site can be redeveloped for industrial and logistics uses following the grant of outline planning permission by St Helens Borough Council in December 2019. The scheme was called in for review by the Secretary of State and a public inquiry held in January 2021. Proposals to regenerate the former colliery have proved hugely controversial, with the council receiving almost 700 letters of objection prior to permission being granted.
