Changes in agriculture over 70-plus years

Courtesy Jim Beaty 2 LEADERS IN OVER 70 YEARS: Until Jim Beaty (left) retired recently, only he and the late Ozzie Luetkemeier (right) had served as superintendents at the Purdue Agronomy Farm. Purdue’s Jim Beaty reflects on changes as he retires as Agronomy Farm superintendent. Community leader, Master Gardener Marvin Kinch passes away

By CARLA SLAVEY Commonwealth Journal Feb 12, 2021 Marvin Kinch A man who stayed involved in just about everything – that was the consensus of those who knew Marvin Kinch. Kinch, a community leader, military leader and former sports editor for the Commonwealth Journal, passed away Wednesday at the age of 77. Among the many accomplishments he is remembered for, one that stands out is the creation of the Children’s Garden, found beside the Pulaski County Public Library. “He took the bull by the horns and turned that empty, vine-covered parking lot into the beautiful garden we have today. He had lots of help, but he spearheaded it,” said former Pulaski County Public Library director Judy Burdine.

How to handle trees with snow or ice loads

Beth Wilson River birch bending in the ice storm of 2009 (photo from http://www.wlky.com/weather/2009-ice-storm-anniversary/24145746)   We ve reached that part of winter where we have a pretty decent chance of a snow/ice event in Pulaski Co. We always learn from these events, we even learn about trees. Let s go over some ways to help trees get through a snow/ice event. Don t shake ice and snow off the branches. When tree or shrub branches bend over, resist the urge to go out and knock the ice or snow off. Woody plants can tolerate a certain amount of bending. Mother Nature seems to do a fair job of restoring the form for most trees suffering this type of stress.
