Teen transported to Topeka after Wednesday night rollover

An Osage City teen was transported to Topeka following a rollover crash in north Lyon County, Wednesday night.  At about 11:15 p.m., the Lyon County Sheriff s Office and Emporia EMS and Rescue responded to the 1400 block of US Hwy. 56 for a one vehicle rollover crash. According to Sergeant Doug Stump, 18-year-old Noah Isaac Smith of Osage City was heading eastbound on US Hwy. 56 in a 2002 Chevy Monte Carlo when he fell asleep at the wheel.  Smith s vehicle left the roadway, rolled and came to rest on the passenger side. Smith was extricated from the vehicle and transported by ambulance to Stormont Vail in Topeka to be treated for apparent non-life threatening injuries, Stump said in a written release. Smith was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

COVID-19 cases drop, but doctors urge vigilance during holidays

The number of new cases, positivity rate and hospital occupancy all dropped on this week’s COVID-19 community transmission and severity scorecard. The Shawnee County Health Department’s COVID-19 scorecard issued Wednesday showed improvement for another week, but doctors are urging people to remain cautious, especially during the holidays.  The county reported 689 cases between Dec. 13 and Dec. 19, which was down from the 793 cases reported on the previous scorecard before. “That number must come down to fewer than 175 cases for the outbreak to be considered under control,” the scorecard update said.  The county’s positivity rate also dropped to 11.1%, which is almost half of the all-time high 20% positivity rate the county reached two weeks ago. Health officials said that decrease could be due to expanded testing of asymptomatic people at the free testing sites in Topeka.

COVID-19 vaccine arrives in Harvey County

The Kansan The first doses of a COVID-19 vaccine arrived in Harvey County this week, with the first doses administered Thursday to medical staff at Newton Medical Center.  Health care workers across the state have started receiving the COVID-19 vaccine, which arrived Monday in Kansas. We were told that 24,000 would be sent to hospitals in the state. That is not going to cover a lot of front-line workers, said Lynnette Redington, director of the Harvey County Health Department. But that is the shipment we are expecting. Hopefully soon we will have more. Those doses are manufactured by Pfizer, which started shipping vaccines this week. On Monday, nurses and doctors in several states began receiving the vaccine.

Stormont Vail medical technologist Mark Neuer works hard every day to keep the Topeka community safe

Prior to the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Stormont Vail medical technologist Mark Neuer was spending his work days labeling blood cultures and processing routine and surgical specimens.  When the coronavirus began overwhelming hospitals and people lined up to be tested, Neuer took on more responsibility. The hospital s microbiology team not only had to continue with their day-to-day jobs, but they began running tests on COVID-19 swabs to determine if a person was positive.  The hard work that Neuer commits to his job every day helped earn him an accolade from Kansas State University as a hometown hero.  According to Jennifer Duncan, an employee at Learfield IMG College, which ran the hometown hero campaign on behalf of the university s athletics department, choosing Neuer was an easy decision.
