Byron Bay could host a two-day, beachside music and arts festival in June this year, after an application to hold the event was lodged with Byron Council.
The ‘Byron Music Festival’ would transform Dening Park, beside Byron’s Main Beach, into an all-ages festival ground with 2,000 people enjoying live music, keynote speakers and market stalls.
The two day event, proposed by the owner of Byron Music, Nick Sergi, would focus on promoting local talent and aim to boost the local economy by attracting visitors to the region during the off season.
‘I ran the Byron Guitar Festival for three years until we were forced to stop by COVID-19, so this is a way of re-igniting the idea of a music festival right in the centre of town’, Mr Sergi said.

Last week, the idea of a 500-person concert at Red Devil Park had the police throwing the book at organiser Lisa Hunt, delivering her a financial one-two punch. First she had to fork out for the User Pays policing service prior to the event, then she copped a $5,000 fine afterwards because police spotted concertgoers dancing in contravention of the COVID Safe plan.

MardiGrass2021 is going ahead and ‘We’re planning it like there’s no Corona but who knows what will be going on with COVID by the first weekend in May,’ said MardiGrass Organising Body (MOB) president, Michael Balderstone.
‘It could be jabs all round or rampant corona so obviously we have to wait ‘n see. ‘
The first meeting to organise the event was recently held in the HEMP Bar in Nimbin with a meeting with the police to discuss the event on 27 January.
‘We all agreed it is impossible to pick what will be going on with corona in three months time. And the rules for gatherings change endlessly, so our plans will have to be super flexible,’ said Mr Balderstone.
